The Arabian Nights is one of the world's well-known collections of Arabic folk tales written during the Islamic Golden Age. Defied by an unfaithful wife, Shahryar is the king of a great empire, but is brokenhearted. Shahryar chooses to marry a new woman every day only to kill her the next morning. More and more innocent women die until one day Scheherazade, the daughter of the King's top advisor, offers to marry the King. The King and advisor both raise objection, but Scheherazade persists, all knowing that the night could be her last. That night, she requests to say goodbye to her sister before her death and she tells her one last story before she sleeps and that is the beginning of dozens of stories that manage to keep her alive.
Germinal is often pointed out not only as Émile Zola's finest work but also as one of the best novels of French literature. The main focus of the novel is on the cruel but true story of the miners’ strike and how they work under unfair conditions and face unjust treatment in northern France in the 1860s. The story expresses clearly the disparity between those who are rich in money and in the interests of their own acquisitions, and those who are in the struggle of earning a living for their family.
The novel is one of the most successful examples of 19th century romances. Although the main subject of the story may seem like to focus on Emma Bovary's tragic story and unrequited love, the writer deals with Emma's character and the trapped life of a 19th century French woman, the contradiction of the marriage institution's on human nature, the hypocrisy of social value judgments and moral measures.
Charles Bovary, who is a good hearted but a witty man, gets married to Emma, the beautiful daughter of one of his patients. Emma is a woman who drifts in the direction of her dreams; she compares her life to the lives she reads in books. She lives in the countryside and she thinks everyday resembles each other. She is tired of her life, and wants to experience designing adventures, fun and excitement. Monsieur Bovary settles in another town for his wife to recover from her increasingly distressed health. However, Emma starts to live forbidden relationships there, wastes money on luxury and also loses what she already has. She cannot pay the debts she secretly made and again she falls into a bigger confusion about her life, which result tragically both for her and Charles Bovary.
